How to choose

Do not start by comparing interface details. Eliminate options in order by platform, maintenance status, configuration source and feature requirements for a more reliable decision.

  1. Start with the operating system

    On iOS, choose Clash Plus directly. On Android, compare Clash Plus, FlClash, Clash Meta for Android and Surfboard. Windows has the largest pool of candidates; on macOS, also consider chip architecture; on Linux, start by comparing Verge Rev and FlClash. If the platform is unsupported, other features are irrelevant.

  2. Rule out unmaintained projects

    Clash for Windows and ClashX Meta are better treated as references for legacy environments than as first choices for new installations. No longer maintained does not mean an existing installation will stop working immediately, but future OS updates, networking-stack changes and new configuration fields may not be supported. Start new devices with an actively maintained client.

  3. Confirm subscription and core requirements

    For a standard subscription supplied by a service provider, most actively maintained clients can handle the import. Clash for Windows, often shortened to CFW, is the default client in many older guides and legacy configurations. It uses a classic desktop layout with sections for configurations, proxies, rules, connections and settings. An existing setup may continue to work, but the project is no longer maintained and should not be the first installation choice on a new device.

When migrating from CFW, first export or back up the subscription URL, custom proxies, rule overrides and script content, then import them again in the new client. Do not overwrite the new client’s entire configuration directory, because local databases, interface settings and core fields differ between projects. After migration, verify rule mode, DNS and the system proxy separately.

The main reasons to choose Surfboard are usually a preference for its mobile workflow or an existing, verified compatible configuration. If a provider generates the subscription automatically, test updates and rule matching with a copy first. If a field is unrecognized, simplify the configuration and remove core-specific extensions before repeatedly changing system network permissions.

When migrating a macOS client, recheck system proxy permissions, launch-at-login items, the configuration directory and the installer matching the chip architecture, in addition to subscriptions and rules. If the system proxy is not restored after the old client exits, browsers may appear unable to connect. Check the proxy status in system network settings before launching the new client.

Migration checklist before switching clients

Clients can share subscriptions and some YAML configuration, but local state, permissions and extension fields generally cannot be copied wholesale.

Four types of content to preserve before migrating

  • Subscription source: Record the subscription URL, configuration name and update method. If authorization parameters are required, use the complete URL provided by the original service.
  • Custom rules: Save manually added DOMAIN, DOMAIN-SUFFIX, GEOIP, RULE-SET and MATCH rules, and record their order in the rule list.
  • DNS and TUN settings: Record whether Fake-IP is enabled, which DNS servers are used, whether TUN is enabled and whether LAN connections are allowed.
  • Proxy group selection: Select nodes or policy groups again after migration. The client’s locally saved last selection usually does not move with the YAML file.

Verify in this order after migrating

  1. Import the subscription or base configuration first and confirm that the client loads it normally.
  2. Choose an available proxy group, enable only the system proxy and test the browser connection.
  3. Check that direct and proxied requests behave as expected in rule mode.
  4. After the basic connection is stable, enable TUN, LAN sharing or custom DNS.
  5. Finally, enable launch at startup and restart the device once to verify that the system proxy is restored correctly.

Which client should I choose for my first Clash setup?

How should I choose between Clash Verge Rev and FlClash?

For advanced configuration mainly on Windows, macOS or Linux, consider Clash Verge Rev first. If you need to use both a computer and Android and prefer a similar interface and workflow, compare FlClash. For either client, choose the installer that matches the actual system architecture.

Can Clash for Windows still be used?

An existing setup can be kept temporarily with the risks understood, but the project is no longer maintained and is not recommended as the primary client on a new device. During migration, save the subscription, custom rules and DNS settings, then recreate them in an actively maintained client.

Can the same subscription be used in different clients?

A standard subscription can usually be imported separately into multiple compatible clients, but the result depends on the subscription output format and the fields supported by each client. If it includes mihomo extensions, scripts or specific rule providers, check compatibility item by item.

Why can’t I connect to the internet after switching clients?
